The Scarpa Terra GTX is a perfect day hiker/light backpacking boot. It is comfy out of the box and not too heavy like some boots I've used in the past. I've tried to highlight some of the categories I think would be important to other buyers:FIT:
I was a little skeptical ordering Scarpa boots because all of the reviews complaining about them being 'narrow' or 'European fit'. I have a normal sized foot (not skinny or fat) and the Terra GTX fits me perfectly. Unless you are a person who is normally shopping for a wide or narrow shoe, I don't see fit being a problem at all. Remember to get a half size up so you can wear warm thick socks and not get blisters.
COMFORT:
These boots are surprisingly comfortable out of the box, no break in needed. Boots I have had in the past require a certain 'work-in' period where you suffer for a short while in order to have the boot flex and mold to your foot. I will be very pleased if these boots get even more comfy than they already are. My feet never get cold in these but I have not been in weather below 25 degrees with them.
COLOR:
Definitely not brown like the photo shows, it's more of a grayish color. Honestly, I like it better because the boots go with anything I wear (not just earth tone gear). That may sound metro of me, but trust me on this one. If you want a brown boot, look for another model or brand.
LEATHER:
The leather is nubuck so it's very soft and catches the eye. It does scuff rather easy though, so if you are anal about having a clean toe on your boot you may want to look elsewhere. I haven't had any deep scratches thus far but I have found my self using my hand to buff out the toes after longer uses just to keep them tip-top. The GoreTex seems to help keep the boots dry and my feet never get wet (granted I've never submerged the shoe)
SOLE:
This boot is definitely a hiking boot and not a working boot. Don't buy it if you are going to beat them up at your job. The sole is Vibram but it's also pretty soft. That being said, they have stellar grip on the trails and take on slimy/slippery situations very well. I was on a hike with my girlfriend who was slipping and sliding on the terrain and the ground felt normal to me in these boots. Know what you are buying them for.
Overall I would recommend this boot to any outdoor enthusiast or weekend warrior who needs a good hiking boot. I do not think this is the right boot for extended snow use, hard work or heavy backpacking because the soles won't take it and you may end up getting wet. But for the average hiker who wants a comfortable versatile boot, don't hesitate!
