Let's face it - these are one pair of ugly boots :) But you know what? They're perfect. Here's the deal. Winter hunting boots need four basic things and for some reason, whether it's Irish Setter to Lowa, no brand seems to get it right in all four areas. Not even Rocky. Until I tried on this boot.

1) Needs to be WARM! Doesn't matter if it's thinsulate or primaloft, you need a good insulated liner. In the northeast, 800g is a minimum. When I'm in Texas on a cold winter hunt, can feel toasty down to 400g. Nevertheless, you need goos insulation. Check mark here.

2) Waterproofing. Lots of boots give you water resistance through a wicking layer like Gore-Tex, and don't get me wrong, you need this too. But then they do something silly like single stitch the sole or fail to stitch in the tongue. Sort of defeats the purpose of waterproofing. Anyhow, everything's glued, melted, and double stitched here, plus gore-tex to boot. Check mark please.

3) Arch support. I've got flat feet but everyone who hikes or walks long distances still needs something boosting the arch to relieve foot fatigue, or in extreme cases, pronation and even pain. These boots have something crazy going on (in a good way) in the foot bed that places the foot precisely in a way that it feels like it's the most comfy pair of sneakers you own. Nice job. Check me.

4) Good tread. Here's where the big design element of the shoe comes into play. The tread is actually more akin to a running shoe in shape, but an excellent pair of hiking boots in tread an durability. In the picture you see the back of the sole round up - thats the sneaker effect that also supports the more progressive design element of the shoe. What's happening here is simply keeping your heel from dragging on the ground when you're walking quietly, perhaps even stalking, while also allowing you to move more freely with smaller footsteps in general. I carry a lot of gear so marching like you sometimes have to do in less progressive soles isn't my idea of a good time. I was really surprised at how much I loved this design element. Nice choice. Checks all around.

The only other point to note is the excessive amount of blaze orange. I suppose thats a good thing if you're in a tree stand. It does stand out, fellow hunters may notice. But it's a hunting boot that will hopefully be covered in mud and blood soon enough. It's a modern design. If you can get over that (I certainly did), I highly recommend this boot. And I've had a LOT of different boots. Happy hunting.
