Full disclosure, I did not buy this shoe from Amazon, but a local shoe seller; the kind where the nice man runs back and forth bringing you what you ask for and helps give you the best fit. Depending on the style of Dansko I was trying on, the sizes were fluctuating. I purchased a 39. The 40 felt too big in the back (my heel popped out as I walked) and the 39 felt rather snug on the top of my foot in this style. In the store, it felt secure, though, and I was wearing thicker socks. I figured it would stretch out, and I could wear only with thin socks. Home I went with my fancy new work shoes! I declined to listen to the advice to "wear them around the house for a few days" to make sure they were the right size, in case I needed to exchange. I was so excited, I wore them out the door then next morning. MY FEET WERE KILLING ME by noon. Totally my own fault, I know. I came to the conclusion that it was simply that this style and shape of Dansko was wrong for MY foot. Yes, I have thick, fat feet, I guess?! Having worn them outside (dummy) I knew I could not return or exchange them, and $150 is just too much for me to toss them to the back of the closet. Off to the internet to research how to naturally stretch out leather shoes. I did find many tips, and after a lot of work, I managed to stretch out the too-tight top part perfectly. No more pain; yay me! Now, they are comfortable all day, and I love them. The reason I deducted a star is because I don't *love* the velcro strap. Nothing wrong with it, but I think I would have preferred a full slip on. But the little flowers are so cute! Finally, if you are curious about the stretching techniques I used: first one was to put a ziploc bag of water inside, and put them in the freezer overnight. Then, wear them until they warm up. Didn't work quite enough, so I tried the "soak your socks in rubbing alcohol and wear your shoes until the alcohol dries up" technique. Rather strange to walk around the house with too tight shoes and wet socks...but it worked, amazingly enough.
