I tried Keen Gypsum Mid KEEN Men's Gypsum Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot , Keen Gypsum shoe Keen Men's Gypsum Waterproof Trail Shoe and Hi-Tec Falcon Hi-Tec Men's Falcon Waterproof Hiking Shoe and found the Moab Gore-Tex Merrell Men's Moab Mid Gore-Tex Waterproof Boot to be the best of the four.1) Keen Gypsum Mid and Shoe was the lightest weight
2) Roomy (too roomy) fit. Fit me loose. Tried a size smaller and it just cramped my toe against the end of the shoe.
3) Gypsum Shoe and Gypsum Mid was the most rugged
4) True waterproof by way waterproof inner lining (Keen Dry Lining) much like the Gore-Tex of the Moab where Hi-Tec offers waterproof mesh (regular mesh treated with chemicals?) and other companies including the Merrell Moab Waterproof only provide waterproofing by way of chemical treatment that wears off with day to day wear (shoe flexing and rubbing against other objects)
WIDTH - Shoe width was never intended to be an indicator of how wide a shoe is measured across in reality because foot width is not a measure of how wide a foot is across. Foot width refers to the circumference (measurement around) of the foot and a flat plane (like ruler) from the heel to ball of the foot. Holly cow these are wide or made for really high arch! I had to fold the excess material of the tongue of the Gypsum Shoe in and over on the waterproof lining wings so it would stay under the laces and allow me to tie it. These folds rubbed into the top of my foot and after only wearing them in the house for two hours I had bruising on the tops of my feet. Similar fit with the Gypsum Mid. The mid was made for some hugely round foot heels and ankles. I could not lace them tight enough around my ankle because the left and right flaps that stabilize the ankle simply came together and touched and would not tighten anymore. This would not have hapened if I had large ankles. With Both Keen Gypsum Mid and Gypsum Shoe my heel slipped out constantly, it is made for above average foot width or those with meaty feet. My skinny boney feet just did not have a chance with the Gypsum Mid or Gypsum Shoe.
WATERPROOF BOOTS - If there is no waterproof liner or seam sealing with all water tight material (mesh is not water tight) then you may want to assume waterproofing is provided by chemical treatment. This does not last. It wears off with day to day wear like shoe flexing and rubbing against other objects. To be truly waterproof there must be a lining of waterproof material, it must be intact with no holes and you must know how to place the boot tongue and lace it correctly. This boot like the shoe version has a waterproof lining so it is waterproof.
RUGGED - Keen Gypsum are so rugged you could bump your feet hiking or drop many day to day objects on your feet and never feel the slightest pain. The leather is so thick, stiff and rigid that it makes for a superior hiking shoe if it fits.
Sadly this rugged boot just did not work for me. I ended up with the more sneaker like less rugged Merrell Moab Gore-Tex guaranteed waterproof.
I had also tried the Keen Targee II Mid KEEN Men's Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot and Targee II ShoeKEEN Men's Targhee II Hiking Shoe at the local mom and pop brick and mortar "outfitters". Those were not for hiking! The Targee II Shoe came just a little more half way up the side of my foot at the ankle opening leaving so much exposed and both Shoe and Mid were so very wide in the toe area. They also were thinner softer leather. That is a plus if you want shoes that trade how rugged they are for quick break in.
